Kiwi Debut at Fieldays® 2026 for Kiwi feedback

As the official Vehicle Sponsor of Fieldays®, JAC first unveiled the T9 PHEV to New Zealand audiences at Fieldays® in June 2025, showcasing a bold orange prototype designed to capture attention and gather real-world feedback.

Everyday Kiwis including farmers, tradies, and families were invited to share their expectations and feedback, with insights fed directly back into vehicle development.

Being tested for Kiwis. By Kiwis.

The T9 has already been proven globally, but to be sure before launching in NZ we put the Diesel T9 to the test.

…and we’re doing the exact same with the T9 PHEV.

Our Kiwi team are putting it through its paces both on and off roads up and down the country with the help of tradies, farmers, ute pros and more.

We’ll be completing testing towing, hauling heavy loads, cruising, 4WDing and more.

Check out some of the footage of testing the Diesel T9 below.

PHEV FAQ

Got a question about the T9 PHEV Ute? Check out some of the details below:

PHEV = Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle

What does this mean?

It’s a vehicle combining the best of both worlds, there can be several different set-ups of how a PHEV works. JAC have picked an application to give the best Ute-performance possible for things such as towing and hauling.

The JAC T9 PHEV Ute combines a dual-electric motor set up, this is powered by the battery.

The battery can be charged in a few ways:

  • Plugging it in just like a normal EV, either at home, work or a public charging station
  • Charging the battery through the T9’s 2L petrol engine
  • Regenerative charging through deceleration and braking

COMBINED (using both battery + petrol hybrid mode):

The NEDC range (a factory testing cycle that most Chinese brands use) is up to 1,005km. We reckon its important to mention that real-world figures can differ depending on driving style, conditions such as road surface and weather.

PURE EV (using EV only mode):

The NEDC range is up to 100km. We reckon its important to mention that real-world figures can differ depending on driving style, conditions such as road surface and weather.

The braked tow rating is 3.5T, and 750kg for un-braked trailers. The T9 PHEV has a Towing Mode that will change the vehicles settings to be optimised for towing.

The payload (how much you can put on/in the Ute) is 915kg.

You can charge the T9 PHEV using a range of options:

  • Charge at home using either a portable charger or install a home charger (the T9 PHEV comes with an included portable charger)
  • Charge at work or other places where EV chargers are installed (eg if you have a fleet vehicle that you drive to the office each day)
  • Charge at public stations using both AC or DC chargers

Charging a work vehicle at home? You can easily measure the amount of power you use to charge your T9 PHEV – your work can then reimburse you for costs, just as you would with fuel costs.

For all options, your local JAC team will be able to organise or recommend charging solutions to meet your needs.

JAC has been building trucks for over 60 years. The heritage also includes success across EV Trucks which are supporting fleets such as DHL, Woolworths and more.

JAC has taken the knowledge of both its commercial vehicles and EV expertise and built a Ute that is designed to be a Ute first and foremost.

They’ve chosen a PHEV system that is designed for doing ‘ute-stuff’ including towing and hauling. One of the main ways this is achieved is through the 4-speed DHT gearbox that delivers power in the right bands for heavy lifting.

You might be quite surprised by how good the charging infrastructure in New Zealand is, especially around main cities and through the ‘electric highway’.

If you know you need to stop for a coffee break or pit stop, why not pick somewhere that has an EV charger, that way you can top up your EV range during your down time!

Staying somewhere for a few hours or overnight? You can also top up charge with the portable charger that comes with the vehicle.

Failing that, you’ve got the back up of being able to top up on petrol to keep moving.

We recommend using the app www.plugshare.com or try out the map from NZTA at www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/ev-chargers

Your local JAC team will be able to recommend and organise finance and/or lease options to suit your needs.

Some banks and lenders also offer lower rates for fuel efficient vehicles such as hybrids.
